RIP James Krenov 1920-2009

On 9 September 2009 it was a sad day for furniture making. James Krenov, an inspirational figure to at least 3 generations of furniture makers dies at the grand old age of 88.His philosophy of furniture making is what first inspired me to become a furniture maker and his booked have been a constant presence on my workbench and on my bedside table.

New pieces on website

Finally, after a few months of procrastination, I have succeeded in updating the gallery pages of my website, with some new pieces. The “Derwen” table was completed in May 2009 for clients in Denbigh, Wales, for their new home. The oak for the table was sourced on the Gower peninsula and as a result the name of the table, which means “oak” in Welsh is particularly appropriate. The top is elliptical which means it has the benefit of a long rectangular table, in terms of fitting in a slightly narrower room, but the intimacy of a round table. Again, the pedestal base designs means that everyone (all 8 people!), can sit comfortably around the table without bashing their knees against awkward table legs.

I am back from my 3rd year exhibiting at the Contemporary Craft Fair at Bovey Tracey in South Devon. As usual, it was wonderfully organised by Sarah James and Nina Fox and there was once again a large turn out (particularly impressive given the Saturday involved a torrential down pour of biblical proportions).  Here are some pictures of my stand…
